A Pile is in effect a concrete column augered or driven into the ground and used to transfer the loads of a building into firm strata.

Piling is an alternative to 'Traditional' Underpinning methods, and is prefered in particular ground conditions

There are two main methods of Piled Underpinning, 'Piled Rafts' and 'Pile & Beam' systems; Both methods have a proven track record.

Piled Underpinning, The R. E. LAY Piled Raft Way

Fixtures, fittings etc. are removed to store. Services are disconnected and stripped-out as necessary. The existing floor is broken-out / removed and the ground reduced to the required formation level. All excavated material and rubble is carted off-site for disposal.

Proposed pile locations are set out as specified. A piling rig is used to auger or drive the concrete piles to the required depth. Tests can be carried out to ensure the ground bearing is suitable. On completion piles are integrity tested if required.

Pockets of the internal and external brick walls are broken out on a 'Hit & Miss' sequence. Anti-heave sheet material is cut and placed across the raft area and through the brick pockets. A polythene damp proof membrane is then layed over the anti-heave sheets.

Reinforcement is placed and tied as scheduled onto the anti-heave material and plastic damp proof membrane. Spacers and chairs are used to ensure that the correct cover is achieved and that the reinforcement will not be displaced when the concrete is placed.

Stop ends are installed to separate each bay of the r.c. raft. The area is cleaned and blown out to remove any debris and foreign objects that accumulate during preparation works. Concrete is batched as specified and placed. Vibrating pokers are used to compact the concrete.

The use of ready mixed concrete and pump is essential on larger rafts to reduce labour and to ensure that the construction is monolithic. On smaller projects the concrete is batched on-site and placed using barrows. Cubes are cast for subsequent testing.
